Like last year, I have done my best to roundup all the competing post-spring/pre-season rankings.
|Boston College||Clemson||Georgia Tech||Florida State||Maryland||Miami||Virginia Tech||Wake Forest|
|FoxSports /CFN (119)||19||32||22||17||31||29||13||51|
Here’s the transposed version:
The “experts” didn’t do a very good job with the ACC last year. That gives little reason to believe they have any idea what is going on this year. Even their own uneven rankings underscore the point. More on that some other day.
Looking at the teams, BC is getting very little respect this year. That seems to be the case every year. I’ll blame the program’s lack of flash and new coach. Will Jags turn out to be the guy the BC fans want him to be?
I have no idea what to think of Clemson this year. There are plenty of tools on the team, but last year’s ending was catastrophic. The media is none to eager to burned by Clemson again, which likely means they’re heavily underrated.
Georgia Tech will be without the services of Calvin Johnson. The good news is that they’ll also be without Reggie Ball.
Florida State will benefit from a new OC and the return of red shoes. I surely hope they drop their first game, but they seem like a team bound for better, more consistent play this season.
Maryland wasn’t bad last year. They weren’t that great either. As a good-but-not-great team, their rankings seem justified.
Does Miami have anything left? I know their coach is gone. Are the QBs gone too? Who knows?
Virginia Tech is the only highly thought of ACC team. It looks like the ACC is theirs to win.
The 51 for Wake is not a copying error. The Deacs are a team that no one else knows how to rank. They’ve got heart and some fundamentals, but is that enough? They benefitted a lot from luck last year, and it is up to the coaching staff to find skill and talent to rely on when the luck runs out. I’m skeptical.
The good news for any team in the ACC is a lack of a dominant members. With a little luck and a little effort, nearly any team can find itself in the championship game at the end of the season. It’s up to the Tigers to start of with a W. Otherwise it will be a long season in-conference.
