Weekend news:
- The baseball team had gained some momentum before the Hurricanes came to town. That momentum is now gone, as the ‘Canes took the first and the third games of the series. Sunday’s Game 3 score was 7-6.
- The 8th ranked women’s tennis team went to Chapel Hill and kicked some baby blue ass this weekend. The #13 Tar Heels lost 6-1.
- Men’s tennis, on the other hand, lost on Friday to #2 Virginia 5-2. And they also lost to Virginia Tech 4-3. The lesson to be learned is that people from Clemson just don’t belong in Virginia.
- The bad news continues on into the world of men’s golf. The team finished 10th at the Administaff ASU Invitational. Coastal was first, UNC was 2nd. USCe finished 4th. The team did finish 8 shots better than 15th place USC-Aiken.
And for the golf team alumni at the Shell Houston Open:
- Lucas Glover missed the cut.
- J. Byrd earned $66,660 by finishing tied for 19th at -8.
- Matt Hendrix had three solid and one “oh my god what happened” rounds en route to winning $34,100 and finishing at -5.
- Charles Warren fared less well, but still made the cut. He finished tied for 66th at 2 over. His check was for $11,300.

- Finally, DJ Trahan finished all alone in the 8th spot. He was 10-under for the weekend and 11-under for the tournament. That performance was worth $170,500.
It may be worth noting that the 5 golfers above combined to win $282,500. I’m fairly certain they won more in a weekend that all the Gnomes make combined in a year. Which all goes to show that the time spent in the classroom would have been better spent harassing the cart girl.
Weekend Update:
- Coach Leggett finally reached the 1,000 win milestone. David Kopp threw seven scoreless innings and the Tiger bats struck early for 3 runs in the 2nd inning. The win kept the Tigers from being swept by Maryland for the first time ever.
- Trevor Booker’s little, I mean younger brother verbally committed to the Tiger basketball team. Devin is 6′7″, 215ish pounds, and the first commitment for the class of ‘09.
- Lucas Glover won $69,500 as he finished tied for 26th at the WGC-CA Championship. [Hopefully I'll remember to keep up with more of the former Clemson golfers through the course of the year.]
- Travis Padgett went on to victory in the 100-meters at the Clemson Relays on Saturday. The NCAA 60-meters champion posted a 10.22 second time that qualifies him for regionals. He and the 4×100 relay team also posted a regional qualifying time.
Hamilton moves back to the South
After 3 years, two games, and a statistical boatload of zeros, Derrick Hamilton has signed as a free agent with Atlanta.
Quick hits:
Invest in orthopedic surgeons: Hamlin had surgery for a stress fracture in the foot he didn’t already break, and ManBearPig also had “minor foot surgery.” Hamlin’s injury should mean more reps for DeAndre McDaniel.
Clemson golf is heading into the third and final round of play at the Puerto Rico Classic. They’re currently tied for fourth. It turns out the Clemson golf team doesn’t stop their low scoring on the course; they extend that ethic to the classroom where they averaged a stellar 2.30 last fall. Good work there, men.
Travis Storrer, signed a contract to play with the Chillicothe Paints.
Some guy on FoxSports says that Gaines Adams was the “star of the day” at the NFL combine yesterday. “Basically he made himself a whole lot of money this week, confirming all the positives regarding his athleticism and explosiveness.”
I am not the NFL’s fastest man
But Justin Miller is.
Kick returner Justin Miller has been named the NFL’s Fastest Man, which comes as no surprise to folks who have followed his career at Clemson and now at New York. He earned the title at a 40-yard dash in Hawaii over the weekend by running … you guessed it … fast!
I’ll post the time if I happen to run across it.
Richardson to stay. Gaddis, probably not.
The P&C is reporting that Barry Richardson has decided to stay put and use his last year of eligibility. Apparently Barry and his family didn’t even bother completing the paperwork to get his draft status officially evaluated. Like I always say, why do paperwork if you don’t have to?
The article also mentions Gaddis. It seems “Clemson coaches are telling recruits they expect Gaddis to turn pro, though Gaddis said he won’t make a decision until he speaks with head coach Tommy Bowden next week.”
Climbing the depth chart
The depth chart for the Florida Atlantic game was released today, which is interesting in and of itself, but it is not within the purview of this post.
I’m referring to Charlie Whitehurst’s ascension to the #2 QB spot for the Chargers. It became official today when the Chargers released veteran QB AJ Feeley.
Feeley had been second on the depth chart behind Rivers, but was outplayed in training camp by rookie Charlie Whitehurst.”That’s why we took the guy in the third round,” general manager A.J. Smith said. “He’s pretty talented. We gave him an opportunity and they had quite a battle.
“It’s kind of more about Charlie Whitehurst than it is about A.J.,” Smith added. “Charlie had a solid camp and he’s getting better every day. He’s had a fast development…
This leaves the Chargers with 3 quarterbacks who combine for absolutely zero starts and only 2 years of NFL experience (both belong to Rivers). That’s bold.
Tigers in the NFL
Scout has a recent update on the performance of some of the Tigers in the NFL preseason thus far. Thus they saved me from having to write up my own post. Hooray for professionals.
I did manage to watch a good bit of the Chargers-Bears contest from several nights ago. Whitehurst was 11-19 for 97 yards in the 17-3 loss. He played about 2 1/2 quarters because they didn’t bother to bring in probable-third-string QB AJ Feely. Near the end of the game, he seemed to have found his rhythm, getting the team near the endzone before he floated one directly to the Bears’ secondary.
Charlie really didn’t look very sharp. In his defense, though, neither did Philip Rivers nor the rest of the San Diego offense. The Chargers, with Charlie under center, had numerous short drives that either began or ended with stupid mistakes. There were a number of penalties and a fumble by the running back.
Hopefully good things are in the cards for him, as well as the rest of the Tiger football alumni. I do wish, however, that after a mistake by him others, he wouldn’t do his “geez” “gosh darnit” “somebody screwed up” routine. We saw the mistake. We know it happened. Let us non-playing losers bitch and moan.
