Initial reactions
- Defense: I’ll give the defense a grade of B. They were pretty good and made a lot of big plays. There was, however, room for improvement.
- Special Teams: Also a lot of big plays on special teams. The return game was strong and we did well defending against returns. The major blights on special teams were the apir of missed field goals. I’ll grade them out at B-, mostly on account of the excellent returns.
- Offense: The offense has a lot of growing up to do. The running game was decent. But the QBs made mistakes and the receivers dropped a lot of passes. Hopefully all the cylinders are firing on Thursday night.
- Unrelated to our game, how sad is it that Virginia lost at home to William & Mary? It’s not as good as seeing Ohio State lose to Navy (shame Navy couldn’t pull off the upset), but I’m always a fan of seeing UVA get stomped on by anyone.
Bottom line: It’s much more satisfying to start the season with a win over a cupcake than to be demolished by ‘Bama at the Georgia Dome.
