Interesting Clemson-Furman Football Facts
-Furman was the first football team Clemson ever played. The game was held in Greenville, SC on October 31, 1896, Clemson won 14-6.
-The second meeting between the two schools was not until 1902. (Clemson-28 FU-0)
-Clemson won the first seven matches between the two school between 1896-1918.
-Furman’s first win came in 1920 with a 20-0 victory.
-Clemson’s first win ever on Riggs field came against Furman in1916.
-Since 1937 Clemson has gone 28-0 against Furman dating back to a 0-0 tie in 1937.
-Furman’s last win, Nov. 26 1936, with a score of 12-0, is Clemson’s only recorded home game, played in the snow.
-The overall record between the two schools is 40-10-4 (Clemson of course)
-Since 1960 Furman has only scored 21pts total against Clemson, 17 of which came in the last meeting in 2003.
-On Oct. 8, 1960 Clemson and Furman wore the same uniform pants. Clemson played Virginia in the afternoon, shipped the pants to Furman for a night match up against William & Mary. Both teams won their games. The story goes, the Furman players had to tape the pants around he waist and the legs to keep them up because the Clemson Players were so much bigger. The pants are regarded as the only Clemson uniforms to defeat two opposing teams from the same state, on the same day.
-Two current Clemson coaches are Furman graduates, Billy Napier and Mike Dooley.
-Clemson has not lost to a Southern Conference school since joining the ACC in 1953, a 37-0 record.
-The last time a team currently in the Southern Conference defeated Clemson was 1936 (Furman), which is interesting because the University of South Carolina was a member of the Southern Conference between the dates of 1936-1952.



I think we scheduled Marshall before they jumped up from I-AA back in the ’90′s. Though they beat us (they beat a lot of people right after the jump with the likes of Leftwich, Pennington, and Moss), they were a I-A team having made the jump and we were able to keep some of those Southern Conference streaks alive.
Marshall, yet another game we lost due to a missed fieldgoal…
Someone was making a comment about Buchholz the other day, and I realized that the outcome of many of our seasons have been entirely reliant upon the success of our PKs.
And somehow Aaron Hunt is statistically (my shear number of points) one of the best kickers in the schools history. Sad.
Man, I hope Furman doesn’t decide to win this time.
