The flag flap returns
The Black Coaches Association, and NAACP–once described by Frank Sinatra as the National Association for the Advancement of Caucasian People–are now trying to work with the NCAA to keep college baseball regional and super regional tournaments out of South Carolina. Since ‘99, the NAACP has urged boycotts of SC’s tourism by blacks due the flying of the Confederate flag as the SC statehouse.
Still with me? Ok, good. I know some of you have short attention spans.
“In 2002 the NCAA implemented a two-year moratorium prohibiting schools in South Carolina from hosting any pre-assigned championships.” This was then extended indefinitely in 2003.
“Now BCA executive director Floyd Keith wants college athletics’ chief governing body to consider broadening the ban to keep all postseason contests out of the state.”
To the NAACP: I like the boycott strategy. Hit the state in the pocketbook. It’s a nice effort, but until now I wonder if anyone in the state has even noticed your efforts.
To the BCA: Way to make this interesting. By directly involving the big U’s in the state, the lawmakers in Columbia are going to have to pay a bit more attention to the issue.
Where will all this lead? Given the typical behavior of the foppish dandies at the NCAA, they will completely back the cause of the BCA. They’re meddling is not limited to mascots. They seem to have no problem meddling with state politics as well. The NCAA has driven this ball way beyond the white stakes. Someone needs to make sure they’re penalized a stroke and distance.
And one can only imagine what the SC legislature will do. The flying of the flag will not go down without a fight. So supposing NCAA folds like a cheap sheet and the BCA gets its wish, will the ensuing pressure from state sports fans override the support of the flag? Given that we’re talking about politicians here–and only state level ones at that–I’m left to believe that they’ll come up with a really inventive proposition. For example–and here’s where they have some experience–they’ll denounce the NCAA and try to force secession of all the public U’s. Unfortunately I don’t see a rush of neighboring states following along, which would lead to a swift demise of all sports programs in the state. If college sports aren’t now more important than that damn flag, then SC will deserve what’s coming to it.

What a bunch of crap. As a ignorant transplanted yankee I know and have heard all about the “pride not prejudice” and “heritage not hate” crap on the flag. Take the flag down, it’s a matter of personal views and if you want the flag you can wear it or fly it. But when I live in the state and “ignorantly” see it as representing a blemish on our nations history and it isn’t even in the states flags, such as Georgia, take the thing down. I am not siding with the NAACP, God knows I like them almost as much as I like ACLU, but this is not going to end. They do not win, you do not lose and everyone comes out looking better. They get their internal moral victory but what does it prove……nothing, and we get the financial rewards. Suck it up.
While we are at it, I think the town of Blacksburg, SC should be renamed as it is obviously offensive. We could call it Whitiesucks. Rap music should be made mandatory over the loud speakers during any break, at all sporting events, not just football and if the players request, during the actual plays. Has anyone else noticed that the state of South Carolina has two primary state Universities that seat 80K+ for most every football game as well as filling their arenas when the basketball teams are competitive and place baseball teams into the super-regionals on a regular basis while filling those stadiums. And who are those fans supporting in such grandeur? Typically African American athletes, and in Clemson’s case an African American Coach who is gaining more and more support as he is improving the quality of our team both on and off the court. Now for the knuckheads at the NAACP, who else is taking youths from areas traditionally poorly educated areas in the rural south and giving them the opportunity to get an education while playing sports they love at a minimal expense. This same thought applies elsewhere as Ole Miss and their Rebel Mascot catch hell from these folks all the time too. I don’t see it happening in the Northeast. They are all watching Pro sports and could care less about the kids running around at the college level. So the plan is to attempt to punish some of the biggest fans in the country whose love of college sports and whose enthusiasm and embracement of the athletes on the field generates opportunities for these same athletes, who ironically are typically the same people your organization is trying to help. As the folks at a certain brewery would say: Brilliant!
The best part is, the flag doesn’t even fly on the state house any longer but on a monument to those in a war long ago fought by people that actually had believes and stood up for them. A far cry from the self ingratiating blowhards that claim to have cause other than creating a name for themselves and fight their battles in courts with other blowhards.
