The Rumor Mill

According to wholehogsports.com, Tommy Bowden has been one of three coaches to interview for the Arkansas coaching vacancy. The vacant position is currently trying to be filled by the new Hog AD Jeff Long. There are no additional details as of yet. Tommy did quote during a phone conference on Monday that he would stay at Clemson for “as long as they’ll have me.” Last week Tommy was reportedly offered a contract extension. The extension has not been made public, but it is a possible two-year extension worth $1.6 really large per year with a buyout between $100- $500 large. There will be more to follow, if there is really anything of substance to post. My guess, is this will just go away and no one really cares.

I’ve never heard “really large” in reference to Mil but I’ll take it. I find it odd that the buy out would only be in teh couple hundred grand range. That seems a little small considering a two year extension would put him out to around 2011 or 12.

From WholeHogSports (w/link)

Clemson coach Tommy Bowden appeared Monday night to be the leading candidate to replace Houston Nutt as Arkansas’ head football coach. Bowden, Tulsa offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and Michigan defensive coordinator Ron English are among those who recently interviewed as possible replacements for Nutt, sources and media, including ESPN said.

FYI, WholeHogSports is “from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Northwest Edition and the Northwest Arkansas Times.”

NOW WHAT! Stupid Bowden bashers. If this goes through I will start punching Bowden bashers in the face when we don’t find a coach that can get us past a 5-7 season.

Bottom line is, this is a buisness. I would do the same thing to get more money out of my job. The problem I have with this, it is hurting the moral of our team and all the potential new players coming in. By the way, check out all of the comments the Hog faithful are dropping on Bowden, they can’t stand him. They all want Gus from Michigan. This will go away but its probably got the Bowden haters a little worreid…

Why would the Bowden haters be worried?

Okay,

I was considering getting rid of him if we didn’t get our act together after the Tech’s. I even developed a term, “Tommy West Syndrome.” Unfortunately, if we lose him now, I think we great chances of getting another true TWS coach, if not . . . we could just let TW come back and remind us all how losing really feels. We played without heart for two games this year, and we lost because of it. If this isn’t resolved before the bowl game, chalk that game up to a loss.

Who would want to coach at a school with the f*ck-jobs over at Tigernet rioting after every loss and calling for your head?

I think Spence needs to go, but not Bowden. He has rebuilt the program. We no longer wallow in a pit of despair like SC. If so many coaches weren’t being fired/resigning right now, I would not be saying this, but this is a horrible year to lose a coach.

This amounts to teh Rich Rodriguez/Alabama issue from last year, or at least I
‘m hoping.
This article was on ESPN.com and references much of the same base information/sources

This scares me two fold. One, it’s the SEC and SEC money. Note we are the “2″ pick from the ACC and are playing their “5″ pick for about the same bowl money. The second concern is the personal relationship of Bowden and their AD. That never helps.
BTW, Gus is at Tulsa as the O.C. and was the head coach at Springdale HS in Arkansas, where all the recruits that stirred up the Nutt mess that ultimately led to his firing came from. I have serious doubts, regardless of his offensive abilities, that he is a legit SEC head coach at this time. The guy at Michigan is someone I am not familiar with.

I can imagine Bowden wanting to leave Clemson where, no matter what he does, some vocal portion of the fan base will be out to fire him. I can’t imagine why Arkansas, where the fans just ran a coach out of town, would be the place he would move to.

Taken solely on record, Bowden cannot seriously expect Clemson to virtually double his pay here in order to match Arkansas. Sure it will be sad for Clemson if he leaves, but if money is the issue, then we will be better off letting him go.

~Bowman: Ron English is the Defensive Coordinator at Michigan. Given the way his D got ripped to start the season (and didn’t really dominate all season), I think it would be hard for him to land a top dog gig anywhere just yet.

Until we get it through our collectively crazy little heads that you can’t coach like D-Ford did (regardless of how much most of us like him) we have to accept we are moving in the right direction with our current progress. No one expected a 9 or 10 win season, yet we raise hell when we just miss out. Instead of being pissed and saying Bowden isn’t firing the team up enough, maybe we should step back, be thankful we get a Peach Bowl bid, and look forward to being a year ahead of what everyone was expecting without leaning on an underclassmen QB. He will now be that much more experienced in the system when his time comes, and therefore more capable to lead the team.

Just got an email from the Uni saying Bowden’s agreed to the extension. Watch the whiners do an about face now…

You know what . . . BASKETBALL . . . that’s right, Basketball. Let’s not talk about football for a while. I going into Cardiac Cat Arrest and we aren’t even playing. I give up. Or as my mentor at my second co-op would say as if he had answered one of the mysteries of life for me:

“Okay, I don’t know . . . okay.”
