Then there were 4

That’s how the ACC is dropping in the CWS. The Tiger’s game started out back and forth with Cal St putting up three early runs. Clemson bats responded and by the end of forth, 6-3 good guys. Cal St rallied though and in the 8th inning strung together a couple hits up the middle to go ahead 7-6 for good. Clemson put a substantial threat on base in the bottom of the 9th, with Taylor Harbin’s lead off double. Here (a good arm chair coaches always do) I would have bunt him over and run the risk of a wild pitch, fly ball, ball to to the middle of the infield, squeeze bunt, etc to be in play and on the pitchers mind. The coaches decided to let the guys in the middle of the order swing. Paul, the ailing Cal St pitcher was brought in to face D’Alessio, getting him to chase a third strike way out of the zone. Widmann and Ben Hall were then retired on a fly ball to short left and a game ending K by Wes Roemer, the Cal St. starter expected to open their game against UNC tonight.

In the other elimination game of the day, Miami got a little taste of roll reversal as Oregon State battered them 8-1 to earn revenge for Saturday’s 11-1 clobbering.

The ACC and east coast in general’s chances of producing a CWS title now lay squarely on the shoulders of the Tarheel pitching staff and their two first round draft picks.

This marks the 6th out of 7 years that the number one seed will not move on to the championship pairing. The Number1 seed has not won since 1999.

Remaining teams and affiliations:
Cal St Fullerton - Big West
Oregon St - Pac Ten
Rice - C-USA
UNC - ACC

Update- Make that three. C-ya Cal St. Fullerton. UNC’s arms are looking good and their bats are on. At least the conference has a shot at bringing home the title still. So much for my predictions and dark horse.

This post from EDSBS seems to be just about right on time and appropriate.
